It all started when Ponyboy, Johnny, Dally and Twobit went to the drive in one night, that's when the socs and the greasers first meet.

Rachel Williams, the most popular girl at West Side High, and her friend Marcia walk away from their drunken boyfriends Bob Sheldon and Randy Anderson when they refuse to put up with their drunken bullshit.

Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny sit behind the girls at the drive in outside. When Dally starts harassing Rachel, Johnny politely tells Dally to stop it and he does, the fact that it being Johnny. As Ponyboy said, "If it had been anybody else but Johnny, Dally would've punched him out."

Dally leaves and the girls start a conversation with Ponyboy and Johnny. The girls don't seem to mind the fact that Ponyboy and Johnny are greasers. That's when Ponyboy realizes that maybe not all the socs are the same.

In the first season, Ponyboy's crush on Rachel is very subtle. He knows he can't do anything about it because he's only fourteen and she's a lot older than him. Dally develops feelings for Rachel. He tells her, despite her hatred she displays for him. Dally knows it would be dangerous in these times for him to fall for Rachel. He says to Ponyboy and Johnny, "I hope I never see Rachel Williams again. If I do I'd probably fall in love with her."

It's not that Rachel doesn't like him back, she always did since the night they first met. It's that she knows what it will do to her reputation if she lets herself fall for him. Rachel makes every effort to avoid Dally, but she eventually ends up falling in love with him.

The two of them keep their relationship secret for a while from their social groups. In the season one finale, the greasers win the rumble against the socs. That's the moment when their friends find out about their relationship that they've been keeping a secret. From that moment on, Rachel and Dally begin going steady together.

In season six, however, Dally breaks up with Rachel when he discovers she cheated on him with Buck Merrill. That is then the end of their relationship.

Soda tells Rachel about his crush on her after she and Dally had broken up. In the season six finale, Dally is going to leave Tulsa to move back to New York. He goes to visit Rachel first, hoping to maybe give their relationship another try. When he gets to her house, he sees her kissing Soda outside. From the season six finale on, Rachel and Soda are a couple. She's who Soda ends up with in the series finale.
